A Bizarre New Species of Mollusk Discovered
Though not new to the planet, this strange little mollusk has just been discovered in the Philippines by scientists. The locals are already familiar with the creature. For the scientists, he is a new type of shipworm. However,he acts completely different than the rest of his kind. While most shipworms feed on submerged wood (hence, the name), this guy’s diet is limestone. That’s right. He eats rocks. What’s more, after he’s digested them, they exit his body as sand. Oh, and as he does this, he is forming channels in his wake that will eventually affect the flow of the water in the river he inhabits. That’s a big impact for a creature small enough to fit in your hand.
New Wind Energy Farm Off New Jersey
This major new player in the clean energy game is estimated to provide power to half a million homes. Based off the coast of Atlantic City, this new wind farm will move New Jersey well along the road to using only clean, renewable energy. Even more noteworthy, the move is being made with the accepted knowledge that the average electric bill will increase across the board. This is proof that the need for clean energy is, at least in this instance, taking precedence over money. In the long run, the benefit will far outweigh the slight cost increase and those making the decision seem to understand that.

Rubber chicken, stat!
Dedicated members of the community turned out for the latest Napa River cleanup to find lots of items, some surprising, most expected. Among the regular array of cigarette butts, plastic, and trash were found a bicycle seat, driver’s license, pay stub and even a rubber chicken. Though it is never great to see all the trash that is simply thrown down by careless individuals, several volunteers say the volume of trash has diminished over the years as awareness has grown. That’s great news for our planet.
World Giraffe Day
Traditionally observed on the summer solstice (the longest day of the year), World
Giraffe Day honors those with the longest necks. The Henry Vilas zoo, located in Madison, Wisconsin, chose to celebrate one day late, however, to encourage more people to come out and celebrate this beautiful animal that is slowly moving toward extinction. Political fighting, poaching, human encroachment and the quest for oil and other resources are pushing the giraffe, like many other species, to the limit.
