Rubber chicken, stat!
Dedicated members of the community turned out for the latest Napa River cleanup to find lots of items, some surprising, most expected. Among the regular array of cigarette butts, plastic, and trash were found a bicycle seat, driver’s license, pay stub and even a rubber chicken. Though it is never great to see all the trash that is simply thrown down by careless individuals, several volunteers say the volume of trash has diminished over the years as awareness has grown. That’s great news for our planet.
World Giraffe Day
Traditionally observed on the summer solstice (the longest day of the year), World
Giraffe Day honors those with the longest necks. The Henry Vilas zoo, located in Madison, Wisconsin, chose to celebrate one day late, however, to encourage more people to come out and celebrate this beautiful animal that is slowly moving toward extinction. Political fighting, poaching, human encroachment and the quest for oil and other resources are pushing the giraffe, like many other species, to the limit.
